Amparo Ortega Obituary

Amparo Lugo Ortega died peacefully in her home surrounded by loved ones on July 6, 2018 at the young age of 92. She was born on March 27, 1926 in Terrenate, a small town in Sonora, Mexico to José Maria and Altagracia (Garcia) Lugo. He father only allowed her school education up the sixth grade due to an old Mexican tradition that the youngest daughter stay home to care for her parents. That all changed when she made a visit to Arizona and met Louis N. Ortega on January 1, 1948. They were married in her hometown of Terrenate on July 5, 1948, after that she started her life living in Tempe, Arizona. During her 70 years of living in Tempe, she was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church. She later joined the Rosary group, and was devoted to her religious beliefs and Our Lady of Guadalupe. She also worked for over 20 years at Gilliland Junior High School as a cafeteria worker, specializing in salads. She was a dedicated, hard worker and would walk to work every day since she didn't drive. She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Alicia, Maria, Estela, and Otilia; brothers, Ramón and Ernesto; ex-husband Louis; and sons José Luis and Ernest. Amparo is survived by her daughter Olivia and son, Daniel. She will be deeply missed by all her family and friends. The Vigil will be held at Richardson Funeral Home, 2621 South Rural Road, Tempe, Arizona on Wednesday, July 11, 2018 from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm. The reading of the Holy Rosary will be held at 7:00 pm by her niece, Marie Alta Diaz. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, July 12, 2018 at 9:30 am at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church, 2121 South Rural Road, Tempe, Arizona. Burial will immediately follow at Double Butte Cemetery, 2505 W Broadway Road, Tempe, Arizona. Following the burial, a reception will be held back at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in McCreedy Hall. The family would like to thank and acknowledge Caregivers Luci Hernandez and Gabi Felix, and the staff of Hospice of the Valley. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions in Amparo's name be made to Hospice of the Valley, 1510 East Flower Street, Phoenix, Arizona 85014 or to Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church. Richardson Funeral Home, Tempe, Arizona is compassionately serving the family.
