Margaret Lewis

Margaret Jones Lewis passed away on October 9, 2018. Margaret was born into an Arizona pioneer family on September 28, 1933, at the Jones’ Ranch at Price and Broadway in Tempe, Arizona. She and her twin brother Max were the youngest of the six children born to Maurice Ellsworth Jones and Vivien Standage Jones. Margaret went to school in Tempe, attending Rural Elementary School and Tempe High School. She received a bachelor’s degree from Arizona State University and went on to graduate studies at University of California Los Angeles. She cut her graduate studies short to marry her college sweet heart John David Lewis at the Arizona State University Chapel on January 29, 1956. Margaret and John had their first child, Tracey while living in Tempe, Arizona. They moved to Tucson, Arizona so that John could attend law school. In Tucson they had their second child, David. After graduation, Margaret and John returned to Tempe. In Tempe they had two more children, Margaret and Julie. Margaret and John raised their four children in Tempe, and never moved away again. As well as being a caring and loving mother, Margaret sewed, read and taught home economics at Chandler High School. She loved puzzles, solitaire and animals. She especially treasured her little dog Mariah. Margaret also loved sports. She was always cheering on the Arizona Diamondbacks, Phoenix Suns, Arizona Cardinals and of course the ASU Sun Devils. She loved the company of her family and her friends. She had a wonderful sense of humor that never left her. Margaret was unique and caring person who touched the lives of everyone she met. She will be missed and remembered by all who knew her as a loving wife, sister, mother, grandmother and friend. Margaret is survived by her husband of 62 years John. She is also survived by her daughter Tracey, Tracey’s husband Eric and their children Avenel and Erik; her son David, David’s wife Teresa, his daughter April; April’s husband Nate and their children Jackson and Charli; her daughter Margaret, Margaret’s husband Peter, and their children Vivien, Mary, Rachel, Georgia, Dominic and Dominic’s wife Andrea; and her daughter Julie, Julie’s husband Obie, and her children Ryan, Maggie and Steven; as well as many nieces and nephews. Her parents predeceased her, as did her brother Cyrus Grant and her sisters Mary, Ruth and Shirley. Max Jones is her only surviving sibling. A Memorial Mass will be held on October 20, 2018, at 9:30 a.m. at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church, 2121 South. Rural Road, Tempe, Arizona. Immediately following the service, a reception will be held at Richardson Funeral Home, 2621 South Rural Road, Tempe, Arizona.
