Mary Teresa (“Teri”) Syme was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer on September 21, 2017 and passed away at her home on January 20, 2018. She was born on March 3, 1949, the daughter of Ralph and Herminia (Heredia) Aguiar in Yuma, Arizona. Teri graduated from Kofa High School, earned her Associate of Arts degree from Arizona Western College and her Bachelor of Arts degree in Education from Arizona State University. She worked as an elementary and early education teacher for many years in the Kyrene and Mesa School Districts and at Dayspring Preschool and Kindergarten. Teaching children was always Teri’s passion. She spent the last four years caring for her granddaughter, Sawyer, which was one of the greatest joys in her life. Teri was predeceased by her father Ralph Aguiar. She is survived by her husband James J. Syme, Jr., son Nathaniel Syme, daughter Jillian Syme, daughter-in-law Gayle Syme, granddaughter Sawyer Syme, mother Herminia Aguiar, ten brothers and sisters, and extended family and friends. A special thank you to Olga Ferryman, Rebecca Aguiar, Charlotte Thomas and Hospice of the Valley, for the special care, kindness and compassion that they provided to Teri and her family during her final days. Teri’s friend Charlotte said it best, “Teri was a force. She made a difference. She was loved. She will be missed.” An informal reception in Teri’s honor will be held on February 17, 2018, from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. at the La Casita Recreation Center at Dobson Ranch, 2719 S. Reyes, Mesa, Arizona, 85202. Richardson Funeral Home, Tempe, Arizona is compassionatelly serving the family.
