Nikki Sherman

There was a time before I knew Donna, Nikki's mother. I can't seem to remember when that was. It seems my life is so entwined with Nikki and her mother, Donna, I cannot remember much before that time. But this is not about me, it is about Nikki and about her early years.

She was born to a brave and gentle mother, Donna Sherman. It's important to know because that is where I believe Nikki got her strong spirit. Her mother was one of the strongest, yet most gentle persons I have ever known. Nikki was adored by her mother and only the best was good enough for NIkki. She was a treasure to her mother and to me. At that time , there was just the two of us to nuture this sweet child. Nikki was so very sweet. She never cried, was so very easy and we took her everywhere. She went to the movies, she went camping, she went everywhere we went. And she never complained and her smile was the light of heaven. She visited our farm in Chandler many times with her mother and loved all the animals especailly the cow we raised for meat. We named the cow Bosa. When we brought the meat home she would not eat it! She never ate beef from that day forward.

NIkki loved the outdoors, as her mother did, and we took her camping many times. she was a delightful child with a smile that could melt your heart. She loved to "rough it".

We never know how our children will turn out or what fate will be theirs. Childhood is fleeting but oh so important in the scheme of things. I know that Nikki was loved beyond measure by a woman who was the example of love and sacrifice . There is no explanation that I have for a family that was plagued by misfortune for generations. I only know that Nikki was born into that family and was a sad but hopeful chapter to her family's story . She had no control over that. Ella is her legacy and is the combination of two women who were brave beyond measure with so much love for life. While we do not know who Nikki's father was, I know he had little to do with the spirit of the Shermans. Nikki and her family are the examples to us all of courage , strength and perceiverance, love and commitment that has no limits for all time and eternity.

It was my honor and blessing to know and love Nikki and her mother Donna and Donnatella Irene Sherman.

Dearest Nikki,

When your mother and I decided to become partners, we never expected that we would be together for almost 20 years. I know you didn’t think we would. I was probably not your favorite person then. But we learned how to be a family through many trials and learning how to be accepting of each other. You even picked out our first apartment together!

You and I never really cemented our relationship together until upon the birth of Ella. I had never expected to have a daughter much less a granddaughter. You and Ella have been the loves of my life. Even when you lived in California, we remained close. Then you moving back to Arizona was a wonderous happening. You brought so much fun and laughter into a life that would have been so lonely and of course, very boring. I loved going to your events and watching you face paint and Ella twist her balloons. One of the most generous things you did for me was to let me have your beloved Cisco in my home. He was so gentle and kind. I will miss you always as I have missed your mother for the last 15 years. I know you are with her now. I will always miss you.
