Albert Hevey Jr. Obituary

Albert L. Hevey, Jr., 86, longtime resident of Kansas City and Lake Winnebago, Mo., Naperville, Ill., and Phoenix, passed away peacefully Tuesday, May 1, 2018 after a long illness. He was born July 23, 1931 in Biddeford, Maine to Joseph Louis Albert Hevey, Sr. and Marie Germaine Z. Hevey. When he was 16, Al lost his beloved mother to an untimely death. But he would never lose the gifts of self-sufficiency, ambition and commitment to excellence she and his father left him. Excelling in school and working odd jobs in the textile mills of his community to contribute to the household budget, Al was accepted into Villanova University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in Economics in 1952. He got to know a local accountant and played an instrumental role in his friend’s firm. Not long afterward, Al joined the worldwide accounting firm Arthur Andersen & Company. He rose through the ranks at Arthur Andersen, working in a number of the firm’s U.S. offices including Philadelphia, Boston, and Pittsburgh. In a short time, he moved to Australia to manage the Melbourne and Sydney offices. He returned to the U.S. to Kansas City in the early 1960s. By 1967, at the age of 36, Al had become one of the firm’s youngest partners. He moved to Ecuador in 1976 to manage the firm’s operations in Quito and Guayaquil, and to Arthur Andersen world headquarters in Chicago in 1978 until he retired. Al always had a sense of humor and would frequently take his place as the dinner table raconteur. He had an innate stage presence and was involved in community theater. He spoke both French and Spanish and could do a Sunday New York Times crossword puzzle in an hour-and-a-half. Al married his wife, Justine A. Hevey of Phoenix, in 1977. He is survived by his wife; a son, Brendan J. Hevey, of Orlando, Fla.; his stepsons, William J. Fleming of Washington, D.C., and Andrew M. Fleming and wife Tamar Hurwitz-Fleming of San Francisco; relatives near his hometown of Biddeford, Maine – brother Lauren (Larry) Hevey of Methuen, Mass., sister Joanne Ouelette of Windham, N.H., and brother Jeff Hodgdon of Biddeford, Maine. Services are private. Memorial contributions can be sent to Hospice of the Valley in Phoenix, and The Judy Fund. Richardson Funeral Home, Tempe, Arizona is compassionately serving the family.
