Della Marie Walters

Della “Marie” Walters, known affectionately as “Granny”, of Phoenix, Arizona, passed away quietly January 27, 2020 at the age of 92. She was born in St. Louis, Missouri to Charles and Lola Adamson. She grew up in St. Louis, Missouri as well as Toledo, Casey, Jewett, Greenup (Old Doc’s Bottom), Illinois. Marie had ten brothers and sisters (Bill, Henry, Charlotte (Burrow), Arlene (Washburn), Evelyn, Emily, Leon, Deon, Forrest (Eddie), and Aileen (Cordes) all of whom predeceased her. When Marie was a young girl she worked as a waitress at Thompson’s Restaurant and as a Harvey Girl in St. Louis. She also worked at the cafeteria at what was then Williams Air Force Base in, Arizona. Sometime later, she held a job as a lead at Motorola Semiconductor plants in Mesa and Tempe, Arizona. After retiring from Motorola, she moved back to the Toledo, Illinois area, staying with her sister Aileen Cordes. In 2006 Marie moved to Flagstaff, Arizona to stay with her son Bruce’s family, eventually moving back to Phoenix in 2008. She married Henderson Walters (deceased) on June 5, 1944 (the day before D-Day during WWII). Henderson was stationed at Jefferson Barracks near St. Louis. They were introduced by her roommate. Henderson was in the Air Force and together he and Marie travelled to Georgia, Texas, and Pennsylvania (Blue Knob, Claysburg AFB). Their final station was at Williams AFB. Family was the joy of Marie’s life. Together she and Henderson raised four children. Charles Walters, deceased, and surviving are Brenda Blaha, Bruce Walters, and William Walters. She had nine grandchildren, twenty-three great grandchildren, and five great, great grandchildren. She is also survived by many relatives (including in-laws) that loved her dearly. Marie had many friends, too numerous to mention, but she talked about them all the time. Della had many names given to her by people who loved her: Marie, Granny, Auntie Granny, Mickie, Bish, Pixie, Purple Pixie, Mimmie, and GG. Granny left the world a better place and her sense of humor, caring, and intelligence will be missed by all. Granny, we hope the wind is forever at your back on the rest of your journey. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 1, 2020 at 11:00 am, with a viewing 1 hour prior to services, at Richardson Funeral Home, 2621 South Rural Road, Tempe, Arizona. Private interment will take place at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona, Phoenix, Arizona. Richardson Funeral Home, Tempe, Arizona is compassionately serving the family.
