Janice Hattrup Obituary

Janice (Bachand) Hattrup passed away on April 2, 2022 at home in Tempe, Arizona surrounded by her family.  She was born in Great Bend, Kansas to Tina Debes Bachand and Emery Bachand on October 3, 1938.   Jan started her education in a one-room school house a few miles from her home. For her first year of high school in 1952, she moved 75 miles into a dorm at St Mary of the Plains and then returned home to finish at Deerfield High School in 1955.  In 1957 Jan graduated from Garden City Junior College and then taught school at Sacred Heart Grade School in Dodge City, Kansas from 1958-1960.  In 1960 Jan married the love of her life, Joe (Marv) Hattrup and they spent almost 62 years together.   In 1965, Janice, Joe and family moved from Kansas to Tempe, Arizona.  In 1971 the family moved to Taipei, Taiwan where Jan was a busy mother and part-time teacher for three years.  In 1977 the family moved to Munich, Germany for three years.  After returning from Germany, Janice earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Education from Arizona State University and then taught first & third grades for 15 years at Kyrene De Los Lomas in Ahwatukee, Arizona.  Jan was active in Mt Carmel church activities, and she was president of Mt Carmel Parish Council for two years.  Jan was a very good bridge player and after retirement in 1997, could be found playing with several bridge groups.  Jan never knew a stranger and always took the time to listen and take an interest in everyone’s families and activities.  She was known for her generosity.  It was common for her to invite a homeless person to join her when dining out.  She was active with numerous charities.  Jan was a fighter. At age 16 she beat Polio.  In her seventies she beat cancer (twice). Recently she beat Covid even though she was in her 80’s. She never complained and was always available for her friends and family. She spent many hours helping and encouraging the grandchildren with their homework, only after giving them some sort of treat.  She is survived by her husband Joe, sisters Paula Cooper, Treva Bachand, brother Denis Bachand, daughters Karen (Lenny) Proseus, Lisa (Gary) McFarlane, Tina (Lee) Conn, and son Damian (Lisa) Hattrup, ten grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.  A visitation will be held on Tuesday, April 5, 2022 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM, with a Recitation of the Holy Rosary at 7:00 PM,  at Richardson Funeral Home, 2621 South Rural Road, Tempe, Arizona 85282.  Mass of Christian Burial will follow on Wednesday, April 6, 2022 at 2:30 PM at Resurrection Catholic Church,  3201 South Evergreen Road, Tempe, Arizona 85282.  In lieu of flowers, Janice's family request donations in her name be made to Windthorst Heritage Inc, PO Box 823, Dodge City, Kansas 67801 or St Mary’s food Bank, 2831 N. 31st Avenue, Phoenix, Arizona, 85009.    Richardson Funeral Home, Tempe, Arizona is compassionately serving the Hattrup family.
